This modules where given so that the students, from whichever program, will have the same set of skills and knowledge that is needed to take care of the patients. These include basic care, mental health, infection control, communication techniques, and medical terminologies.

To be enrolled in a program, you must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma. You must also have a clean record to pass the federal and state background checks for criminal records. For those with medical backgrounds, records such as negligence, theft, drug abuse, patient abuse, or malpractice may prevent them from working in Ohio as a state-tested nursing assistant.

To work long-term in a long-term care facility, your name must be on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. One way of gaining entry is to pass the license exams, which consist of a written/oral portion and a clinical skills evaluation. Another option is by applying for reciprocity. Certified nursing aides from other states may apply directly into the Registry by providing a valid ID, a copy of his social security card, contact information such as address and contact number, date of birth, and the states where he is registered. This information can be faxed to the Registry at (614) 564-2461 or send through e-mail at NAR@odh.ohio.gov.

Once into the Registry, you will be eligible to work as a nursing aide for up to 2 years. To retain your active status on the Registry, you must prevent your license from lapsing by providing proof that you were able to get paid by doing qualified work for a licensed nursing facility. You may either do 7 ½ consecutive hours or a total of 8 hours, which may fall on different dates.

If you happened to change your name before renewing your license and you want a new card, you will have to contact the D&S Diversified Technologies at (877) 851-2355 and pay them the fee of $25. They will also ask you to produce a copy of your driver’s license, social security card, and a legal document showing your change of name like a marriage certificate. The same number can be contacted if you want to replace a lost license card.
