Parents need to know that Bones and All is an edgy romantic drama based on Camille DeAngelis' same-named 2015 novel about two young cannibals (Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet) on a road trip across America. Love blossoms between a young woman on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter as they embark on a 3,000-mile odyssey through the backroads of America. However, despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and a final stand that will determine whether their love can survive their differences.

Bones and All / Film synopsis

The narrative climax of the novel is Lee's decision to embrace Maren sexually, after which she eats him. Lee, she believes, consented to being eaten as a characteristically morbid expression of his love for her. Through his apparent sacrifice, he pushes Maren to accept herself just as he has accepted her.

At its core, Bones and All is a story about acceptance. Maren and Lee cross paths during a time in their lives when they're both in desperate need of solace. In DeAngelis's version, for the weight of their love to offset their horrific actions, their eating habits must exist as a curse rather than a choice.

At some point during all the action, his bag is knocked over, and the braid spills out. Maren notices Kayla's bright blonde hair as the most recent addition to it and understands that Sully must have used her to find out where Maren and Lee were living and then eaten her.

Is Bones and All about drugs? ›

If Bones and All's real meaning is an attempt to literalize the horrors of addiction by substituting the consumption of human flesh for alcohol or illegal drugs, this might explain why the characters feel this way.

Sully continues his story, noting that he attempted to track his son down but, once he was adopted, Francis could not abduct him without attracting attention. Now, Sully concludes, it's too late for him to reach Francis in the mental institution, so he stalks his own granddaughter, Maren, instead.

But Bones And All is a different kind of film that is a character study of two young adults who are traumatized by their base instincts and struggling to understand why they have to be this way. It's definitely heartbreaking to watch Lee and Maren have conversations about being eaters.
